Stunning Exhibition by Knaresborough Photographer
North Yorkshire’s Knaresborough Library is to host an exhibition of photographs taken by local photographer Charlotte Gale during a recent trip to Nepal. She was there to take part in a literacy and regeneration project developed by the Rotary Club of Harrogate Brigantes.
Charlotte travelled to Nepal early in 2014 with six colleagues from several Yorkshire Rotary Clubs on their annual visit to work on a long-term project aimed at changing young lives in the remote Panchamul Valley. The project has brought the internet into the valley and installed IT suites in the valley’s schools. These developments are improving literacy, increasing educational opportunities and aiding economic regeneration.
In addition a linked microloan scheme is also supporting local people and helping to increase the wealth of the inhabitants to a point where, eventually, they will be able to bear the cost of maintaining the educational improvements that the project is bringing. The micro-loan scheme was initially set up using £2000 raised by Yorkshire Rotary Clubs; enough for over 50 loans. Knaresborough Rotarians have recently committed a further £200 following a presentation by Charlotte on her return; helping six more families.
This year’s visit also initiated a twinning initiative between Panchamul and Rossett Schools. Year 8 students from the schools have been paired and will exchange handwritten letters which are scanned and sent via email, a modern twist on an old idea which will foster understanding between the two cultures.
The exhibition of stunning images of local people at work, study and play and the breath-taking landscapes of Nepal will be open in Knaresborough Library from Monday 1st September until Friday 3rd October during library opening hours.
